WACA – Feasibility study for the restoration and development of the mangroves of the lower delta of the Senegal River, right bank

As an interface between the terrestrial and marine environments, mangroves perform a triple function of protection, nutrition and fertilization of the coastal environment and the species that inhabit it (David, Cillaurren and Caillaud, 1990). Coastal environments today constitute an exceptional object whose state, evolution and changes must be analyzed (Bingono-Meba, 2004). The economic interest of mangroves is known due to the large production of wood and the abundant fish fauna associated with them (Kwassi et al, 2005).

However, mangrove ecosystems have often been degraded or destroyed under anthropogenic action. Therefore, the integrated management of these coastal zones requires a good knowledge of the coastal landscapes. The objective of this study is therefore to carry out a diagnosis of the ecological, environmental and socio-economic situation of the mangroves of the lower delta with the aim of proposing adequate measures for the restoration and valorization of these mangroves.
