By creating the Diawling National Park in 1991, the Mauritanian state restored an ecosystem that had been heavily disrupted in the Senegal River delta by the creation of the Diama anti-salt dam. Today, nature has regained its balance and people are once again living from their traditional activities: fishing, market gardening and crafts... In 2005, the PND, like its neighbor the Djoudj National Bird Park (Senegal), joined the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the lower delta of the Senegal River.
