Shared Monitoring

The central and peripheral areas of the PND are subject to different anthropogenic pressures, which must be regulated for good conservation of the natural environment and biodiversity. For this, the PND has set up shared surveillance between park rangers and the local population, thanks to the signing of various conventions.

Pressures linked to human activities on the PND territory

The dryPND systems are under various pressures anthropogenic and Non natural such as carbonization, poaching, overfishing and poor fishing practices, pollution from irrigated agriculture, overgrazing, poor exploitation of natural resources, urbanization, etc..

Setting up a monitoring system to ensure the protection of ecosystems

To ensure the protection of this wetland of international importance, the PND leadership has put in place 3 operational fixed monitoring stations (North, central and South dike) as well as 17 agents in the surveillance division and a division head. In addition to the 3 fixed positions, a mobile brigade is active throughout the territory of the Park and its surrounding area. In 2020, a new monitoring post was placed in the Aftout nesting site, in order to monitor the area during nesting periods.

Involve local communities in the management and protection of the protected area

In 2019, thanks to the RAMPAO PPAM project, 3 shared surveillance pilot agreements were developed and adopted, allowingdirectly involve villagers in protecting the park and its biodiversity, and to support the PND monitoring teams. The observation was that there are villages spread across the entire protected area, which makes it possible to cover a wider area than with traditional patrols. Each convention corresponds to a zone :

  • North Zone : In the village of Vous Lebhar, 3 people were trained and equipped with full clothing, binoculars, a camera and a telephone.
  • Central area : In the village of Dar Es Selame, 2 people trained and equipped in the same way.
  • South Zone : In the village of N'Diohoss, near the islands of M'Bogé, 3 people trained and equipped in the same way.
