Environmental awareness & education in schools

Awareness, mediation and environmental education (EE) are priority missions for the PND, so much so that it is an integral part of the Development and Management Plan (program 5 dedicated to Communication and Environmental Education). The objective of environmental education action plan in the school environment is to ensure the appropriation and improvement of the environmental behaviors of pupils and students located in the Park area.

The targets of the PND EE program

  • Target 1 : Schools located in the commune of Ndiago (levels 4, 5, 6)
  • Target 2 : Universities (extension of the EE program) (L2, L3, master levels)
  • Target 3 : Schools in the capital Nouakchott (middle and high school levels)

The expected results

  • Students are involved as observed actors in the life of the park. They take ownership of local issues by adopting environmentally friendly actions and behaviors within schools and in their daily lives.
  • Teachers are made aware of the different themes linked to conservation and the environment, in order tomake behavioral changes long-term and dissemination of knowledge to students, who are the future heirs of natural resources.

The different types of actions carried out by the PND in terms of environmental education

Activit © 1 : Teacher training

Training sessions for teachers (around 30 so far) in the basic cycle of Environmental Education are carried out to strengthen their capacities in the field of the environment following modules linked to biodiversity, ecosystem services, climate change, hygiene, etc.

Activit © 2 : Educational sessions within educational establishments

Modules on the biodiversity, conservation, ecosystem services, sustainable management of natural resources, climate change, environmental risks (fires, poaching, coal, etc.), pollution, domestic waste management, hygiene and health, etc. are developed. Supplies, school books, t-shirts, cleaning equipment, trash cans, etc. are distributed.

Activit © 3 : Field excursions

Visits to sites of biological and ecological interest, visits to hydrological works, visit to cooperatives (fishing, crafts, gathering, Typha coal manufacturing…), involvement in activities of reforestation and regulation of invasive species, etc.

Activit © 4 : Organization of thematic environmental days

Organization of environmental days (examples: world sea turtle day, world environment day, world wetlands day, etc.).
