The Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education and Reform of the Educational System organized, on Saturday February 25, 2023, an educational excursion to the Diawling National Park (PND) with students from basic education at the schools of Tigmatine, Mederdra and Saad Ibnou Mouadh in Riyadh, in Nouakchott South

This educational excursion carried out at the PND is part of the implementation of the national program called “green schools program”, which was the subject of a joint communication presented to the Council of Ministers on March 11, 2021 by the Ministers of the Environment and Sustainable Development and National Education and Reform of the Educational System.

The main objective of this program is to promote the acquisition and transfer of knowledge relating to the environment and its issues with a view to developing students' state of mind and awareness for sustainable management and conservation of resources. natural.

Then make the basic student understand the importance of the environmental issue on a global scale and influence their behavior on a local scale.

Through such an approach, the student will become aware of his potential role as an actor in environmental protection and a messenger service to his parents and society.

The guided tour itself

Arriving around 10 a.m., the educational mission was received by the Director of the PND Daf Sehla Ould Daf accompanied by his staff at the entrance to the Park.

Following this stop, the Director of the Park thanked the MEDD and MENRSE authorities for choosing the PND to welcome the schoolchildren for this educational visit, during which the schoolchildren were made aware of the importance of the monitoring post of the North dike, which constitutes the main entrance to the Park, before being informed on the hydraulic management of the park, with the aim of recreating the estuarine system before the development of the Diama dam.

The students subsequently received detailed explanations on the importance of the commodity which is water, essential for the life of humans and plant and animal species.

Ornithological stops were organized to observe the habitats and birds that the Park hosts during this winter period.

During this stage the park team provided the delegation with binoculars and telescopes for bird observation. Explanations were provided on how the co-management of natural resources with users works, which represents the main asset for good management of the area.

The second stage allowed the schoolchildren and the delegation accompanying them to discover the flooded plains of the Park and the rich biodiversity they host. Explanations provided by the Director of the Park, the Conservator, on its management, with the aim of recreating the estuarine system before the development of the Diama dam, were crucial to understanding the fragility of the functioning of this park.

The students received explanations on traditional and sustainable fishing practiced by Takhredient fishermen for the sustainability of resources.

A reminder also of the key dates of the Park, namely the date of creation, its classification as a Ramsar site, its establishment as a reserve and biosphere as well as the number of species of fauna and vegetation that it shelters.

Finally, the delegation went to the Diama dam in order to understand the functioning of this infrastructure and to visit the mangrove restoration site which constitutes an unprecedented example of success in the sub-region.

The end of the visit was marked by the distribution of sets of school supplies by the PND for the benefit of schoolchildren consisting of 200 backpacks, 200 Park Environmental Education booklets in Arabic and French and leaflets on the PND.

This visit took place under the effective supervision of Advisor Cheikh Maata at MENRSE, Mr. SYLLA Hamedine Deputy Director of Planning, Coordination and Statistics (DPCS) representatives of the steering committee, the Education Inspector of Keur Macéne, the director of the PND, its DAAF, the curator and the communications officer.

The PND takes this opportunity to thank the BACoMaB and the Partnership with the European Union-Mauritania through the sectoral support of the 2015-2019 phase 2 fishing agreements, which enabled the PND to ensure the logistical support of this assignment. 

This activity is part of the implementation of the action plan of the priorities of the program of HE President of the Republic Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, implemented by the government of the Prime Minister, HE Mohamed Ould Bilal Messaoud.
